Suvereto is a Comune (municipality) in the Province of Livorno in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 56 miles southwest of Florence. It has around 3,500 inhabitants and is one of the municipalities of Val di Cornia, home to major wineries. It is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages of Italy. The name is attested for the first time in 973 and is derived from the Latin suber, "cork", so Suvereto is the "cork woods."
Tradition and folklore
The Palio of Suvereto is an event that takes place twice a year. It is a competition between teams of "pushers", which is organized through the cobbled streets of the old town. The pairs of pushers put the barrel from 5 tons of belly and push, as evenly as possible, on the circuit trying to overcome their opponents. The first, the Palio di Santa Croce, is held in May while the second falls August 14 and is called the Palio of the Emperor. The Palio originally ran on horseback during the celebrations of the Saint Patron of the country and has an ancient origin. Suvereto is divided into Suvereto terzieri (areas), more preciously, Castle, St. Francis and Borgo. Castle (black and yellow) is the right part of the little Tuscan village and is nearest to the fortress. St. Francis (red and blue) instead is on the left and takes its name from the former convent of which remain the church and the cloister. Borgo (green and yellow) instead is the most external part of Suvereto. (source: Wikipedia).
